She has completed four rounds of chemo and is staying positive by eating well, exercising and doing yoga.

The week before her state test, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She passed her test with an “A” but has not been able to work due to her mastectomy and chemo. She is struggling financially and has asked for rent.

Sarah is a 33 year old mother of two children. Her youngest child was born with Severe Fetal Hydrocephalus and had Brain surgery five days after her birth. While breastfeeding her daughter, she found a lump in her left breast. After a needle aspiration biopsy and Ultrasound, her surgeon determined it was likely benign but continued to follow her over the next year and a half. At a routine follow up, a second lump was found and was watched for nine months. That lump grew and after another needle aspiration biopsy, it was found Sarah had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. She had Stage II Breast Cancer and underwent a modified radical mastectomy with a full axillary dissection and is currently receiving chemo. Sarah is a part time Physician Assistance and her husband is full time Firefighter. She has been unable to work since April and with her and her daughter’s medical needs, they are struggling financially. They never thought they would be facing these hardships.

Jeanette feels helpless at times because she has always taken care of herself. Her mother always says “don’t be afraid to ask for help as long as you know you have or can help others”. Jeanette stated her mother he has no idea how right she is.

Marcy is 40 years old. In January 2014, she got the “doctor wants you to come in today” call at work. She received the diagnoses of Invasive Carcinoma with positive margins nine months after her mother got the same call. Marcy had the sentinel node surgery to determine the progression of the cancer as well as genetic testing. Marcy had stage 1 triple negative Breast Cancer with clear lymph nodes and negative BRACA results. She opted for a bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction followed by chemo. She had just started a new job the week before her diagnoses and feels extremely guilty for the time missed and her coworkers having to pick up the slack. Minutes before her surgery, Marcy received call from her father that her basement had flooded. Her family has been there for her and is supporting her emotionally. Marcy knows she will complete this journey eventually, but she is in need of financial aide.

Ann is 62 years old. She was diagnosed with Stage IIIA Breast Cancer in June 2014. She is currently receiving chemo and is likely to have surgery in December 2014. She is unable to work at her high-paced, high-energy job but found out she is able to take early retirement. She is hoping to celebrate the winning of the Gathering Place’s Dragon Boat on the Cuyahoga River in September 2015!

Joan is a 48 year old mother. After her divorce, she moved back home and finished her radiology degree. She worked as a radiology technician for 1½ years but was let go due to financial circumstances of her employer. Joan started working as a substitute school bus driver and things were looking promising for a contract for the next school year when she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer (Invasive Ductal Carcinoma). Joan is fortunate to have the support of her mother but is in need of assistance with gas for her and her mother’s doctor appointments.

Tanya is 42 years old. She was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2012. She lost her job after taking time off for three surgeries, chemo and radiation. She goes to the Cancer Center monthly for maintenance treatments. Her bones ache a lot but she tries not to focus on it. She is receiving SSI but worries about her finances. She is gracious for any help.

Linda is 67 years old. In 2003 she woke one morning and found a lump on her right breast. She had a mastectomy, radiation, and a “new chemo” that worked very well. The radiation weakened her legs so she was not able to work. In 2007 she had a mammogram which showed a mass in her left breast. She underwent another mastectomy, chemo, and radiation. Her side was hurting and she was having a hard time getting out of bed so a bone test was completed. She was diagnosed with bone cancer. She completed another round of radiation and the pain went away. In 2011 a tumor was found close to her spine. She underwent another round of radiation which shrunk the tumor. Linda has acquired a lot of medical bills since she has been in and out of the hospital.

Deborah is 63 years old. She was diagnosed with Stage I Breast Cancer in January 2014. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy and lymphnode dissection and had complications along the way. She has been unable to work as a traveling histologist because of the traveling involved and toxic chemicals/gases she works with. She recently obtained SSI but is hoping to get Social Security Disability. Deborah’s husband is retired and also has health issues. It is difficult to meet their monthly expenses with their limited income. Deborah is grateful for any assistance.

She is behind in bills which has caused tremendous stress.

This has emotionally and mentally strained Rita.

The diagnosis came as quite a shock since she had a normal mammogram screening in November 2012. She has a Master’s Degree of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences but is currently unemployed and uninsured. Her financial situation has caused a great amount of stress, however, she continues to be a positive role model for her daughter.

Vanessa is 57-year-old widow. She was diagnosed with Stage II Solid Tumor Breast
Cancer in August of 2013. She relocated to Cleveland to seek a second opinion at the
Cleveland Clinic and had surgery in September 2013. Vanessa has a Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling but is currently unemployed due to her relocation. She has support from her church, family, and friends.
